Hormonal IUDs

Hormonal IUDs are a common and long-lasting type of birth control. They’re small, plastic T-shaped devices that a doctor puts in your uterus. Once in place, they slowly release hormones to help prevent pregnancy for several years. This article will explain how they work, their benefits, side effects, and what to think about before getting.

Unlike copper IUDs that use copper to stop fertilization, hormonal IUDs release a man-made hormone called progestin, specifically a type called levonorgestrel. This hormone prevents pregnancy by thickening the cervical mucus and thinning the uterine lining. For some it causes ovulation suppression and can reduce heavy menstrual bleeding.

Some hormonal IUDs are FDA approved for protection lasting up to 8 years. This long lasting protection provides you with reassurance and there is no need for daily or monthly maintenance. The IUD is also a reversible form of birth control that can be removed at our doctor’s office. It can also help facilitate hormonal regulation as it releases small amounts of progestin which can help to regulate one’s menstrual cycle. This may reduce painful or heavy periods. For some people it may even suppress menstrual cycles. IUDs are also one of the most effective forms of birth control with over a 99% rate of effectiveness at pregnancy prevention. Additionally, IUDs are a suitable choice for women who either cannot or prefer not to use estrogen-based birth control. They are also considered safe for use during breastfeeding, offering dependable postpartum contraception

There are a few potential side effects with hormonal IUDs such as breast tenderness, headaches, acne, mood fluctuations, and nausea. Others include changes in menstrual bleeding such as spotting or longer periods.

When considering a hormonal IUD one should consider several things. Do you frequently have heavy or painful periods?  What is in store for my future? Am I looking to get pregnant soon or in a few years? If you’re considering a few years or have painful periods, then a hormonal IUD would be a great option for you!

At Women’s Global Health, we offer comprehensive education about your health and the devices that can be utlized for your care. We offer two types of hormonal IUDs in our office, Kyleena and Mireena IUDs.
